NEW JERSEY – Hillary Clinton spoke and introduced founder Beverly Bond at the event held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark Friday. The special is set to air on BET on Tuesday.
Hillary Clinton spoke at the Black Girls Rock! award ceremony Friday night, and Black Twitter is skeptical of her motives.
The Newark, N.J. event, which will air on BET Tuesday, honored Rihanna and Shonda Rhimes, the Associated Press reports.
“My life has been changed by strong black women leaders,” Hillary Clinton told the audience. “All of our kids, no matter what zip code they live in, deserve a good teacher and a good school, a safe community and clean water to drink.”
This is, after all, the same candidate who said “we have to bring them to heel” in a speech about at-risk youth, calling them “super-predators,” and snapped at a protestor who called her out on those comments. Throughout her campaign, he’s been accused of pandering to black and Hispanic voters.
Less controversially, honoree Rihanna spoke at the ceremony, the AP reports. “Thank you so much for celebrating us in a world that doesn’t celebrate us enough,” she said.
“The minute you learn to love yourself, you will not want to be anybody else,” she added. “Role model is not the title they like to give me … [but] I think I can inspire a lot of young women to be themselves and that is half the battle.”
